Origin of Las Canteras

This important walk on the incomparable beach of Las Canteras, began to settle for the joy of the citizens in the early thirties of the twentieth century

From the years of 1936 and 1937 it was promoted by the municipal council already fully urbanized according to the project of the Spanish architect Miguel Martin Fernandez de la Torre.

Its history begins a hundred years earlier, although one form or another was the scene of conquest by the Spanish troops commanded by Juan Rejon, who, according to some historians, suggest that he landed right where he says, El Arrecife , in front of Confital.

In 1840, the isthmus of Las Isletas appeared as "de Guanarteme" or Guanartome, badly transcribed, in a map of 1874 located more or less where today is the road to Tenerife.

Riudavets in 1879, attributed the name of "yellow quarries", mentioned for the first time referring to its beach.

In a correspondent of "Puerto de La Luz", the architect Fernando Navarro created the topographic map in 1911, when the process of expansion of the city until then was loosely bound between the decrepit walls of defense with the valleys and the mountains was unstoppable. the sea.

The "beach of Las Canteras" was already mentioned in the form of text, after the conquest of the island and its colonization with many new human settlements, began to extract large quantities of sandstone in the coastal area southwest of Las Isletas, for the construction of some of the most imposing buildings that have been erected on the banks of the ravine and the Guiniguada torrent.

The extracted blocks were also used as bases in the foundations, pillars and colonnades centuries ago with the cathedral, as well as for walls, doors, architraves, etc., of the noblest and oldest palaces of Vegueta, the Vegueta de Hernán de Porras.

Those unique pieces of rock of whitish sedimentary composition and easy styling due to its special sandstone structure, which then hardens when dry, were easy to carve by skilled stonemasons.
